Knitter Nerd Podcast Episode 3: Timeless Knits

In the third episode of The Knitter Nerd Podcast we meet another Kickstarter superstar, Michele, who bought the podcast option for her friend Diane who is a designer of gorgeous things. I have one of her patterns ready for the perfect yarn and you should check out her designs here, and see a preview of some right now to tempt you over.

Diane Martini has some gorgeous designs and she has generously given you KN readers a 25% discount for the month of December! Go to her Designer Page and use the code polo2015. This is valid right up until the end of December 2015, meaning that it’s the perfect time to get a pattern to make your loved one something pretty. Even better, make it for yourself! You can bet the Marigny Sweater is going to be for myself.

Additionally, comment below with your favourite of Diane’s patterns and I will pick one of you at random on December 16th and purchase the pattern for you as a prize. You have to have a Ravelry account for me to be able to gift something to you, but c’mon, you’re knitters. You already do!

Click here (you can download it directly as a .wav or an .mp3 to take away with you) or listen below.

Diane is a knitwear designer. Here are her designs.

Michele is the generous person who helped fund my Kickstarter and did so on behalf of Diane because she’s a lovely friend! She sews and knits.

You will hear random animal noises at points in the podcast because cats really enjoy interrupting loudly at all opportunities.

Also, we laugh a lot. Michele and Diane are funny and friendly people and we spoke for a good hour longer than this outside of the recording. That’s what I love about knitting: there’s so much community around it.

Some notes:
– Read more about Knit in Public Day here.
– How to crochet plastic bags into mats for homeless folk.
– How to crochet your seams together.
This is qiviut. It’s lovely.
– Diane’s failed design is made of tencel which is great but does not hold its shape.
– Brooks Farm Yarn. Here or here.

Take a look at two of the patterns we discussed: the Marigny Sweater and the Versicolor Cowl.

There’s an odd pause and continuation at the end five minutes. Don’t shut it off until the end! We stopped talking and then realised we had more to say. It’s hilarious, because we are yarn addicts.

Again, stop by Diane’s store and don’t forget to use the discount code – polo2015 – as well as commenting here with your favourite pattern for the chance to win it!

Thank you again Michele and Diane for your support and a whole lot of fun.

The Appeal of Knitting Podcasts

The thing about knitting is that you don’t generally need your ears to do it. That leaves them free to take in whatever you want, and if you’re like me and easily distracted, it’s a great idea to listen to a podcast. Even better, why not listen to a knitting podcast while you do?

I like to listen to in-depth, complicated, fascinating podcasts like Hardcore History or the much-lauded Serial Podcast, but when I’m knitting something more interesting than stockinette I can’t do it. I need something that I can tune out while I figure out how I missed a YO and fudged my k2tog tbl. It needs to be interesting but light-hearted, and that’s where I turn to knitting podcasts.

One of my favourites is Never Not Knitting, especially the catchy theme tune which is now in my head again. There’s also Knit 1 Geek 2 which appeals to me for obvious reasons, and I occasionally binge on The Knitmore Girls.

Tomorrow I add to the list with the first of my two guest star podcasts. A fellow writer for NerdUnderground.net, Alex will be joining me to talk about his knitting projects and which Doctor is his favourite. As you can see, he fits in well around here.

Check out the Knitter Nerd podcast on Saturday if you’re interested!

Knitter Nerd Podcast Episode 1

Here it is! The Knitter Nerd Podcast, the real episode one.

Thank you again to those who supported my Kickstarter campaign; you are the reason I have this new microphone. I love you all, and anyone who listens to it.

So without further ado…

If you want to download it, click here for your options.

Show Notes

Yes, I said I would post this on Saturday but I ended up out of the house most of the day buying hand-knit things of glory and wonder. I will let you know more about that on Wednesday.

Find my friend Sophie’s blog here, and blame her for this knitting obsession.

Kniterary is my Local Yarn Store.

Find the Nerd Underground comic reviews and podcast over here.

Look at the baby cardigan I made.

See a picture on Instagram of the dreadlock hat.

Apparently I’m not being trolled; the Yarn Harlot says ‘nupps’ rhymes with ‘soups’.

See my book reviews here.

Here’s the Welcome to Night Vale book. Review will come Friday, but will be on my Goodreads tomorrow.

Some good comics for you:

Rat Queens

Tet

Lumberjanes

We(l)come Back

No, I’m not a Boom! Studios fangirl. Why do you ask?

Oh, and as a note – the pictures of the Faroese shawl will have to wait. I’m hoping to get photos this week, but I couldn’t wear it on Saturday. It was too cold, I needed all the layers and the shawl is too unwieldy to go beneath a coat.

Go see Christopher Sebela’s adventures in the Clown Motel here.

Kickstarter · Podcast

Welp. That Went Well.

Still not entirely sure how it happened, but thirty days have passed and my Kickstarter campaign is funded. Including the pledge I got from an offline friend (I love you C.J.), it totalled $785. SEVEN. HUNDRED. AND EIGHTY. FIVE. DOLLARS.

This blog is not only levelling up, it just beat the goddamn Boss.

It takes a few weeks for everything to process, so there won’t be much news for a while. Just know I’m thankful for all your support – whether you pledged, shared, or just thought happy thoughts. Soon enough the Knitter Nerd podcast will launch with its jaunty new tune (more on that later) and the blog will be upgraded. I’m pretty sure I have enough to figure out getting it onto a different server, but I’m still working that out.

My cousin Jack is writing a short tune for my podcast intro. He’s a musician by trade, recently graduated and already a radio star (he was on BBC Radio 6 a few weeks back). I’m proud of him and pleased he’s doing this, and thanks to you it’s not even a struggle to pay him – even though I would have figured it out if the Kickstarter hadn’t happened, because Jack is awesome.

Everything. Everything is awesome.

If this post is all over the place, I apologise. I’m a bit excited. Back to your regularly scheduled yarniness any day now.

Knitter Nerd Podcast: Episode One – Manitoulin Yarn

Yep, that’s right fellow knitting nerds. I’ve decided to do a podcast.

The first episode is very short and I only tell one quick story about Manitoulin and my yarn adventures, but that’s okay. There will be more on Manitoulin later in the week, but it’s important I share what lovely yarn I bought there.

Coming up on Thursday will be a follow-up post with photographs and more discussion of the yarn, so stay tuned.

Or something.

Download file here (right click).

Show Notes!

The dyer I reference is Freshisle Fibres, and  you can find their stuff here.

I highly recommend checking out her fibres. They are lovely and the naturally dyed ones are glorious.

That’s it, that’s all the notes. This is not the longest podcast ever.
